Steal Or Die Rare Events: Names and Round Decisions

Rare Events

  • Named examples: The official description lists Full Blackout, Bloodbath and Malfunction as rare events.
  • Different subjects: A rare event is not the same information as a map-expansion announcement or a monster name.

Identify the event before deciding which part of the run actually changed.

Steal Or Die: rare eventsIdentify the event before deciding which part of the run actually changed.

Start with the event that is actually active

Steal Or Die names Full Blackout, Bloodbath and Malfunction among its rare events. Keep those names distinct rather than treating every dramatic round change as the same mechanic. Full Blackout has a documented visibility change: the map loses power and becomes nearly completely dark.

An event name should help you identify the present situation. It does not establish a shared damage bonus, spawn chance or duration for every event. Keep the current warning and the scene attached to the name before changing the whole plan.

Preserve the heist objective through the interruption

The survivor still needs a useful return with the carried haul. If an event interrupts a search, decide whether the next action is finishing a known route, avoiding an unfamiliar detour or reducing unnecessary detection. Do not let a dramatic warning turn every survivor into a group running in unrelated directions.

Use Full Blackout for the darkness-specific response. Use Bloodbath for keeping the risk decision deliberate, and Malfunction for separating a round event from an assumed control failure. Those pages keep the subject of the correction clear.

Do not confuse a round condition with a patch

The v1.45 announcement expands Facility and Office. That is version information, while a rare event concerns the round you are playing. A monster’s name is another separate subject again.

Use updates for the version announcement and maps for the setting. Keeping those categories distinct prevents a lighting event, a new corridor and an entity encounter from becoming one imagined rule. The useful event response is based on what changed in this run, while preserving the exit and the haul as the final goal.
